The Babes in the Wood

The Babes in the Wood

Hermione and Harry are being taken by their Nurse (the Dame) to be looked after by their Uncle, the Sheriff of Nottingham, after their Father (King Richard) is believed to have been killed in the Crusades.

Hermione acts as if she has swallowed a Thesaurus, never using one word when three will do.

The Sheriff is always raising taxes, and he uses his three stupid henchmen to do the collecting.

The wicked Sheriff has another ward, -Maid Marion who by chance meets Robin Hood in the forest. Meanwhile the Sheriff learns that he has to look after Hermione and Harry, but when he learns that they have a fortune, he plans to have them killed in the forest.

Back at the castle the 3 useless henchmen are tasked with baking a cake, which as you would expect is a rich source of traditional Pantomime mayhem, – with an exploding oven!!

After the interval is a schoolroom scene, with plenty of corny jokes. This can have children taking small parts, or adults acting as children.

The forest animals care for the babes (optional scene with children as animals) when they are abandoned in the forest; but they are rescued by Robin Hood.

Robin raises an army of villagers to overthrow the Sheriff and his men, and at last Marion is free to marry Robin Hood, with the blessing of a surprise visitor who has been in disguise – King Richard!

Between scenes there is an optional troubadour – Alan-a-Dale.

This was first performed to rave reviews by East Bridgford Drama group, in association with St. Peter’s Academy.
